This project is part of Phase 3 of the Towns Fund, a national government fund to boost regeneration and local connectivity. Sandwell Council propose a signposted walking route from Smethwick Rolfe Street Train Station to the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, through the Windmill Eye estate, 1¼ miles in length. Those travelling on foot will be able to make their way easily with new signposts directing them between the train station and the hospital, on a route through quieter residential streets. Pedestrian crossing points will also be improved at side roads, for example by adding tactile paving which is a safety measure to let people with visual impairments know that they are approaching a crossing point. Work will begin in early February 2022 and finish between March and April 2022 with minimal disruption.
