A4123 New Segregated Cycle Lane

1/2
Update, February 2022:

Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council contacted residents between February and March 2021 with proposals for a new two-way, segregated, off-road cycle track along the A4123 Birmingham New Road. Designs have been updated where possible to reflect the feedback received, please find these for viewing at the bottom of the page. As the scheme proposals progress, updates will be posted to this page. Construction will begin on the cycle track the week commencing 21st February 2022 with the intention to complete works by summer 2022. Sandwell Council apologises for any inconvenience caused during this time.

Project details:

The A4123 has been identified as a key part of the strategic cycle network for the whole West Midlands, and a number of projects are ongoing to improve this major road for all users.

Walking and cycling provide huge benefits to the physical and mental health of our residents, as well as to air quality and our environment.

Local and regional aspirations for increased cycling and walking will only be met if suitable cycle paths and footpaths are provided, and this project forms a key part of that. Residents have told us that the main reason they don't cycle more is because they don't feel safe enough, and the only way to correct this is with high-quality, protected cycle paths along our major roads.

Funding from the Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund now gives us an opportunity to deliver the first section of the A4123 route.

The funding will provide a top-quality cycle path between Burnt Tree and Tipton Road junctions. This will provide excellent connectivity to the future Metro stop, which will be found at the centre of this section.

People who cycle will be protected from motorised traffic as well as from pedestrians, and this protection will be maintained across side roads wherever possible. This cycle path will not have an impact on traffic flows on the road, as it will be created on the existing verge.

There is ambition for future extensions to this route, to Wolverhampton Ring Road in the North, and the Hagley Road (linking to Birmingham) in the South.

There are existing plans to widen the Metro bridge to allow space for the cycle path to continue uninterrupted and work is also underway to provide safe and efficient passage for cyclists across Burnt Tree junction.
